Average Electric Bill by State
The average US home pays $150.68 a month for electricity, or about $1,808 a year. That's 874 kWh a month at 17.23¢ per kWh. Hawaii has the highest average bill at $207.89; New Mexico the lowest at $94.65.
2026 so far
EIA publishes full-year figures each October, so 2025 is the latest complete year. Its monthly data for 2026 runs through August: homes are paying 18.19¢ per kWh on average, 6.8% more than in the same months of 2025. At that price, the average home's usage would cost about $160.94 a month. That figure is our estimate, not EIA's: it applies the 2026 price change to the 2025 bill and assumes usage stays the same.

Why bills differ: price or usage
A bill is price times usage. Some states pay a lot because power is expensive: Hawaii, California, Massachusetts have the highest prices. Others pay a lot because homes use more of it: Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee use the most.

Where the numbers come from
The US Energy Information Administration collects revenue, sales and customer counts from every electric utility (forms EIA-861, 861S and 861U). The average bill is residential revenue ÷ residential customers ÷ 12, so it includes delivery charges and fees, and is an average across all homes: apartments, houses, electric and gas heated. The 2026 price change compares January–August 2026 with the same months of 2025, from EIA's Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.B. Full methodology.
